CARE Lanka – an initiative to transform audiological care in Sri Lanka

Intro to the program

CARE Lanka is a 2-year national initiative to transform hearing care in Sri Lanka. It aims to address Sri Lanka’s audiological service gaps through mobile clinics, newborn hearing screening, hearing aid provision, and capacity building.

CARE stands for:

• C – Connect

• A – Assess

• R – Respond

• E – Empower

The program has been designed to rest on these 4 pillars to address a key aspect of audiology that needs improvement in Sri Lanka.

About/vision

In Sri Lanka, too many children miss the critical window for hearing intervention. The CARE Program is a national initiative that addresses the system’s weakest points — from detection to diagnosis to support — and replaces them with a sustainable, scalable model of care.

The CARE Framework

1. Connect:
We will work with hospitals, clinics, and communities to identify equipment and training needs — ensuring newborn hearing screening can begin where it’s needed most.

2. Assess:
Using mobile outreach and newly equipped maternity wards, we will deliver early hearing assessments to thousands of infants and children.

3. Respond:
We will provide free hearing aids, referral pathways, and early intervention support to children diagnosed with hearing loss.

4. Empower:
We will invest in Sri Lanka’s hearing care future — training audiologists, raising awareness, and building a system that lasts.

Impact Goals

– 280,000 babies screened over 2 years

– 2,000 children fitted with hearing aids

– 20 new audiologists trained

– 70 hospitals equipped with hearing testing equipment

Why It Matters

50% of Sri Lankan children with hearing loss are diagnosed too late.
We’re changing that — by starting early and supporting for life.

Who We Are

The CARE Program is powered by the WISH Foundation, Sri Lanka’s leading nonprofit in hearing care. Backed by expert audiologists, ENT consultants, and program strategists, we have decades of experience and a clear plan for national impact.
